Sara is the newest addition to L&S, joining the Advising team in August 2007. Her various experiences in student services began upon completion of her Master's degree in Counseling from St. Mary's College in 2001. Over the course of the past six years, she has advised students at the community college, undergraduate and graduate levels. In this capacity, she counseled students in career, academic and personal issues. Sara also taught, and continues to teach courses within the community college system in topics related to student success, study skills, career planning and assessment, academic probation and job search skills. In a non-academic setting, Sara has counseled dislocated workers and individuals seeking a career change in the field of Workforce Development and served as Lead Birthparent Intake Counselor for an open adoption agency. At Cal, Sara has especially enjoyed advising the re-entry and transfer student populations. Her admiration and appreciation of this group of students originates with her mom Sherry, who over the course of several years of attending community college part-time, transferred to Berkeley and completed her bachelor's degree at the age of 50. In addition, Sara makes an extra effort to be aware of and sensitive to the assortment of challenges all students face in their transition to the amazing U.C. Berkeley campus. |
