Starting Sept. 8, our drop-in advising hours are from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (Wednesday 1 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.). Scheduled appointments are available 2-4 p.m. You can either call us at (510) 642-1483 or come to 113 Campbell Hall to make your appointment. Office hours are weekdays 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., (Wednesday 1 p.m - 4 p.m.)
Before Sept. 8, there will be a limited number of drop-in advising
appointments available in 113 Campbell. Most new freshmen will be directed
to group advising workshops or Finding Your Way appointments.
Teams of professional Letters & Science (L&S) advisers are assigned to each residential unit as well as those living outside of the campus residential system (Commuters). They are available on selected weekday afternoons (and in some cases, evenings) and will meet with you in the designated L&S office of your residential unit (or 113 Campbell if you are a Commuter). To find out the days and times L&S advisers are available in the residences, go to the main menu and select your residential unit.
You can arrange a pre-scheduled appointment by calling 510-642-1483... or just drop by!
Preparing for an appointment
It's important to note that advisers (for the most part) do just what our title implies, suggest or recommend a course of action. There are times when a situation calls for a directive, especially when we are discussing requirements or deadlines. But, in general, we are not inclined to give you THE answer. We are more likely to ask probing questions, or give you a list of resources, or provide you with additional ideas that will help in finding the right answer for you.
As L&S advisers, we are here to help get you started and make sure that as you go along you continue to work within the framework of the liberal arts program. We encourage you to meet with us to find the path, get help in working with roadblocks, clarify directions, seek guidance when you find a fork in the road, and make sure you are on track. Before you see us, we do ask that you go through these general guidelines to help in making your advising session more fruitful:
Review the Earning Your Degree guide.
Come up with a list of your initial major(s) of interest. Read up on your choices in the Smart Start.
Check out the websites for programs of interest to you... for example:
Study Abroad (EAP)
Undergraduate Research (URAP)
UC in DC, minors, Cal in the Capital
Career Center (for info on pre-med, internships, etc.)
Write down a few questions you want answered or issues to discuss.
Check out our webcast about the Finding Your Way program!
See your adviser!
To see an adviser in your residential unit, use the menu on the left and click on the name of your residential unit ("Commuters" if you live off-campus). Or call 510-642-1483 for more information.
Let the journey begin!
Don't forget to watch those deadlines - once the add/drop deadline passes, you will NOT be able to add or drop any courses. Make sure your telebears is exactly how you want it before the deadline!
