FYW for Transfers: Enrichment

Study Abroad

Students from every major can fit semester- and year-long international study programs into their careers at UC Berkeley in both foreign-language instruction programs and programs that are taught in English. In cases where you are interested in using study abroad classes toward requirements, check ahead of time with a College Adviser for evaluation of possible breadth course credit, and visit your major adviser for evaluation of possible major course credit.

Are you interested in greater flexibility for course selection and destinations? Then visit the Berkeley Programs for Study Abroad and its three programs. Are you more interested in a pre-designed course program for a summer? Then visit the Summer Session's Travel Study.

Berkeley Programs for Study Abroad (BPSA)

The BPSA office is a one-stop center for you if you are interested in study abroad through UC-sponsored Education Abroad (EAP) Programs, Non-EAP programs, or Scholar Ship. The BPSA office provides information on funding study abroad, which in most cases can be comparable to or less expensive than continued study at Berkeley.

UC Education Abroad Program (EAP)
These are UC study abroad programs.

Non-EAP Study Abroad
The BPSA provides limited resources on study abroad programs sponsored by various American universities outside the UC system.

The Scholar Ship program
This is an oceangoing academic program aboard a passenger ship dedicated exclusively to undergraduate and postgraduate education.

Summer Travel Study

Berkeleys Summer Sessions' Travel Study programs provides study abroad programs characterized by professor coordination of short term courses and cultural engagement.

Enriching Your Course Schedule at Cal

Your major is likely to take only a little more than half of your time here at Cal as a transfer student. That means there is a lot of room to broaden your liberal arts education. If you want a truly renaissance education or as you personalize and enrich your major(s) and minor(s), think about adding some work in from some of these great programs.

Democratic Education at Cal (DeCal)

DeCal courses are usually offered for 1-4 units of credit on a passed/not passed basis. With DeCal you can explore academic interests outside of the boundaries of established disciplines.

Discovery Courses

While these courses are designed to satisfy the L&S breadth requirements, they are also just great courses to take. Taught by some of the best professors on campus, these courses are deliberately designed to engage and ignite the minds of non-experts.

Honors Courses

Berkeley offers honors courses for highly qualified students. Usually designed for seniors, a few of these courses are available to lower division students. See your major adviser for details.

On the Same Page

On the Same Page brings faculty and students together around a shared intellectual experience of reading the same book and encourages them to participate in the rich liberal arts dialogue. All students can talk about the book in a variety of contexts including one-time group discussions with professors, concerts and film screenings and author visits.

Make sure you take at least one class specifically in your intended major department during your first semester. Even if it is not remaining prereqs or upper division requirements, any class offered by your major department will help you to determine early on if the major is still right for you. Sometimes the Cal version of your major varies widely from what you can experience at community colleges or other four-year institutions.
